The Mustangs edged the Poets, 26-24, at Hughes Stadium to hand Dunbar its first loss of the 2026 season.

BALTIMORE, MD. — Rivalry games are often decided by the smallest of margins, and Saturday’s showdown between Mergenthaler Vocational-Technical High School and Paul Laurence Dunbar High School delivered a finish worthy of the occasion.

Mervo found the end zone in the final seconds to secure a dramatic 26-24 victory over Dunbar on October 17 at Hughes Stadium on the campus of Morgan State University. The win gave the No. 5 Mustangs a statement victory over the No. 4 Poets in a matchup between two of Baltimore City’s top high school football programs.

With both teams entering the contest at 6-0, the stakes were clear. By the final whistle, Mervo had emerged with the city bragging rights and Dunbar had suffered its first defeat of the season.

A Rivalry That Delivered Until the Final Whistle

The Mervo-Dunbar rivalry has long been one of the marquee matchups on Baltimore’s high school football calendar. With passionate fan bases, talented rosters and a history of competitive games, the annual meeting carries significance well beyond the final score.

This year's edition lived up to the anticipation.

The Mustangs and Poets battled through a tightly contested game, with neither side able to create enough separation to put the outcome out of reach. As the clock wound down, the contest came down to one final opportunity — and Mervo made it count.

The late touchdown proved to be the difference, lifting the Mustangs to a two-point victory and sending their sideline into celebration.

For Dunbar, the narrow loss was a difficult ending to a game that remained within reach until the closing moments. For Mervo, it was a defining win against a familiar rival and a reminder of the importance of finishing every play.

Mervo Makes a Statement

The victory improved Mervo to 7-0, extending the Mustangs' winning streak to seven games and strengthening their position among Maryland's top high school football teams.

More importantly, the win demonstrated the Mustangs' ability to deliver in a high-pressure situation against an opponent of championship caliber. In a rivalry where momentum can change quickly, Mervo remained in position to capitalize when the game was on the line.

Dunbar, meanwhile, dropped to 6-1. Despite the setback, the Poets remain a formidable opponent as the regular season approaches its final stretch.

A game of this magnitude can have postseason implications, but both programs will need to quickly turn their attention to the challenges ahead.

Baltimore City Football at Its Best

Saturday's matchup was another reminder of why Baltimore City football continues to command attention across the state. When two established programs with championship aspirations meet, the result can be a game that comes down to the final possession.

Mervo delivered the decisive moment this time.

With the regular season moving toward its conclusion, the Mustangs will look to carry the momentum from their rivalry victory into the weeks ahead. Dunbar will aim to respond and regain its winning form.

One thing is certain: when these two programs meet, the final whistle is never guaranteed to come without drama.

Final Score: Mervo 26, Dunbar 24
